3G ELDs Will Soon Be Non-Compliant: What This Means for You as a Motor Carrier

The final announced 3G sunset date is Dec. 31, 2022, which may impact motor carriers if their electronic logging devices rely on a 3G. To avoid compliance issues, carriers should contact their ELD provider and ensure the ELD does not rely on 3G and meets all minimum requirements.

Most legacy vendors do not offer the level of functionality you will find in Motive's end-to-end suite. Take any required actions as soon as possible to upgrade or replace your device. It should be noted that upgrading to a device that supports a 4G or 5G network may incur additional costs.

What are the benefits of upgrading to a 4G ELD?

  1. Extended Coverage: Extended wireless network coverage, particularly in rural areas, with wider coverage ranges and improved network reliability.

  2. Faster Connections: When it comes to initiating connections, more bandwidth and faster data speeds, as well as lower latency, are desirable.

  3. Compatibility: Better compatibility with new technologies and, in many cases, lower long-term total costs.

Newer 5G networks are just beginning to roll out and offer even faster connections and lower latency, but most 4G/LTE technologies continue to be the most widely supported and cost-effective (and the 4G sunset will not occur until after 2030). As they become available, 5G networks may pave the way for self-driving cars and other next-generation technologies.
